These images have been sitting in my camera for a few weeks. Unfortunately the weather was not kind on the day, rained for most of it and was very overcast. Pity, really it would have been nice to see bigger crowds there. Decided to convert the shots to black & white basically because very few of the shots I took demanded colour.

The last photo gives it away. Belfast on a sunny afternoon with my 50mm 1.8. Its a terrific lense and very light and compact to carry around. Makes you work on your feet instead of relying on the zoom lense.

The Minutes at the "Fighting Blindness" Charity Gig

Fighting Blindness funds research into cures and preventions into different types of blindness. You can find more about this worthy cause at their website www.fightingblindness.ie They staged a fundraiser in the Button Factory on Thursday 3rd July featuring four great Irish bands: Dark Room Notes, DC Tempest, The Amazing Few and The Minutes.

Aslan, what can I say that hasn't already been said. They are into their 26th year and still going strong. Definitely a must see live band. Their next album will be an album of covers and I am really looking forward to it.

I met an Aslan fan who told me he could give me a good picture and then proceeded to take off his shirt. On his back, he had this great tatoo, worth a photo I thought.

I was back at the Academy again on Friday to capture the last of the Republic of Loose's Friday nights residency (you could say I am a fan). "Vol.IV Johnny Pyro and the Dance of Evil", their third album is now out and has got rave reviews.

11th April saw Republic of Loose play their second gig of their four dates in the Academy. The venue was stuffed, literally wall to wall with people. Support on the night was provided by Dirty Epics and The Millionaire Boyz. The Epics played a ballsy set and the boyx were a mixture of hip hop and rap.

The Loose have released their excellent new single, "I Like Music" from their forthcoming album, 'Vol IV Johnny Pyro and the Dance of Evil'. The album is due for release on the 2nd May.

Really enjoyed shooting this band, plenty of guys to choose from! They played a great set, featuring songs from "Aaagh! and their new album.

For the encore they were joined by the opera singer, Judith Mok for two tracks and then Damien Dempsey joined the Loose for two numbers.

The Discarded Retarded @ The Academy 19/03/08

I came across The Discarded Retarded by chance at the Battle of the Bands Competition which is currently being held at the Academy every Wednesday night. As mentioned in my earlier blog re Aortal the ultimate prize is to play at Oxygen 2008.

The Discarded Retarded burst on to stage with two of their members wearing huge masks of Bertie Aherne and Mary Harney.Their performance, if I was to sum it up in one word would be manic. The guy wearing the Bertie Aherne mask had bottles stuffed in his shorts which he was banging with sticks! I didn't know whether to just enjoy this band or take some photos.

Went to support Aortal at the battle of the bands in the Academy. The heats run on a Wednesday night and 60 bands have signed up to compete for the ultimate prize to play at "OXEGEN 2008". The winning band will also get their songs aired on the radio, and get €1000 recording time in Dublins top recording studios. These guys are on the up and up, two sold out gigs in the Button Factory in late 2007and now a sold out show in the Amabassador together with touring nationwide to promote their debut album "Heroes and Ghosts". Their hit single "San Diego Song" spent weeks in the charts and they have just released their new single "Grace don't wait".

I was looking forward to this gig, having seen James & Band in August of last year. This occasion marked the release of their single "In Light" at the Crawdaddy on Thursday 17th January. Support on the night was provided by Carla Brunell, Asha and Gina Moore. There was a good turnout for the nite and the band were in great form. It was obvious to everyone that they were enjoying themselves.

A great live band with Brendan on Lead Vocals who likes to cover as much ground as possible, both on and off the stage. Three great bands played to raise funds for Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin on Sunday 18th November 07 at the Button Factoy. DC Tempest opened the show, followed by Penfold DM, with The Kinetiks headlining.

I was looking forward to seeing DC Tempest play because I hadn't seen them live since March of this year. It was my first time in The Button Factory since the renovations and its a gorgeous venue. DC Tempest played a fantastic set and have a EP due for early release in 2008. They are playing Whelans on the 3rd Jan, which will be a great excuse to go out after the new year celebrations. Paul Hourican marked the release of his new single "Even though you’re gone" with a live gig in The Crawdaddy with a full band. There was a good turnout for a Tuesday night and the audience were well versed with Paul's songs. There was a party atmosphere in Radio City for SUDDYN'S single "Gravity" launch. The first act to hit the stage was an air band who were very entertaining and and knew how to throw some shapes. Next up was Borndays, check them out here .

By the time Suddyn hit the stage the venue was full. They were very impressive and delivered a tight set.Their latest single "Gravity" beat off stiff competition from Elvis Presley and The Backstreet Boys in this weeks singles chart reaching 24.

The accompayning music video was shot on location in the Guinness Storehouse. Suddyn are the first group to be bestowed the honour of shooting in this infamous landmark.

Next up was James O'Toole and Band. James, a Dublin based musician has just released his debut album"Twentyfirst Century Man" independently which features 10 tracks. His influences range from Gospel, Leonard Cohen, John Lennon, Antony and The Johnsons to Jeff Buckley. You can buy his album here

Robotnik followed JD Thompson. Robotnik otherwise known as Chris Morrin is a singer songwriter from Dublin. For the Lovemusichatewar gig it was just him and a guitar, sometimes Robotnik can be a five piece band. Robotnik was unpredictable, unhinged and thats what I enjoyed about him. Lovemusichatewar - Dave Lordan

The lovemusichatewar gig was held on Wednesday 29th August in Eamonn Dorans. It had an exciting line up, Dave Lordan, JD Thompson, Robotnik and James O'Toole and his band. There was a disappointing turnout which was a shame as this is a worthy cause.

While I was there I was handed a leaflet regarding the "Raytheon 9". Basically, on the 9th August members of the Derry Anti-War Coalition occupied and decomissioned the offices of US-based weapons manufacturer Raytheon in Derry, N Ireland. Nine protestors including well known journalist Eamonn McCann have been charged under the Terrorism Act with aggravated burglary and unlawful assembly and face lengthy jail sentences if convicted. They need the support of the entire anti-war movement.

Their non-violent direct action was in protest at the involvement of Raytheon in supplying the weapons used in bombing Lebanon, Iraq and Afganistan. Raytheon is the world's largest missile manufacturer and the fifth largest military contractor. For more information, check out http://www.raytheon9.org/

Dave Lordan, an Irish writer, performer and poet kicked off proceedings by telling us a few stories. He warmed the crowd nicely. He also was the M.C. for the night. Later on in the evening, he recited some poetry. Some of you might have caught his act at the Electric Picnic gig.

The Flaws @ The Village Sat 28th July

The Flaws have played a number of support slots for The Thrills throughout the country and Saturday night they did the honors again. They played to a packed Village and received an enthusiastic response from the crowd. The Thrills @ The Village Sat 28th July

The Flaws were the support act for The Thrills and the venue was already packed by the time they took to the stage. The audience gave them a warm reception as they belted out their songs including their new single "1981".

Next up was The Thrills who went down a storm with the crowd. They played hits from their two albums "So Much For The City" and "Lets Bottle Bohemia" as well as tracks from their current Album "Teenager" including their classic new single "Nothing Changes Around Here". I got chatting to a guy who had come over all the way from Wales to the Village to see The Thrills. They finished with a great cover of "Dancing In The Dark" by Bruce Springsteen. Halves at the Crawdaddy Tues 17/7/07

Garageland & liveinyourlivingroom.com presented “THE SHOWCASE” live @ The Sugar Club, Thursday 14th June 2007. The first of six massive shows,it featured six of the very best unsigned bands in Ireland. The bands playing were Eyeslave,Corsairs, Colm Heaney & The Bad DJs, Karrier,Travega and Dali. I took photographs of the last band to hit the stage, Eyeslave, a five piece rock oufit from Drogheda, Co. Louth. Their excellent debut single "Rise "is out now. Vesta Varro @ HMV, Album Launch

Limerick band, Vesta Varro released their album "Exit Here" on Friday 8th June, 2007. To mark this they played a gig in HMV, Dublin and will be playing nationwide until early September. Among the five tracks they played was their current single off the album "Pyramid Clocks" which made Irish top 40 and "Weighted Love" which also featured on the Murphys Live 2007 compilation CD. Heritage Centre @ Whelans Sat 2nd June

Saturday 2nd June saw Heritage Centre play to a packed Whelans. This was no mean feat considering it was bank holiday weekend and huge throngs leave the capital. Presentation was second to none, with inflatable toys and all manner of props including a bubble making machine. This all added to the party atmosphere. The songs didn't disappoint either with the song "Stars in the City" in particular resonating in my ears. Check out this band soon, you won't be disappointed. Prior to Jemson Green were a band called Eyeslave who were second on the bill that night. They hail from Louth and they packed in a powerful rock performance with energetic front man, Shane on vocals. Their single "Rise" is out on Friday, 15th June. Waz

Waz from L.A., California who was on a short tour of the UK and Ireland kicked of proceedings in Eamonn Dorans. With just acoustic guitar, keyboards and electric guitar his band held the audience. The Village, Dublin hosted the two finalists of Murphys Live ilya K and The Chapters and special guests The Automatic on Thursday 10th May. The two finalists played a storming set with very contrasting styles but it was Waterford band, ilya K who were crowned the winners much to the delight of their fans.

Ilya K won a fantastic prize worth €10,000 that includes an EP launch with Fifa Records, studio recording time, a national distribution deal, full PR and a six month management deal.
